Let me start with the simple definition of sustainability according to Wikipedia, it refers generally to the capacity for Earth’s biosphere and human civilization to co-exist.
If I ask myself “am I doing enough to co-exist with my nature/ Earth/Biosphere?”
Answer is “NO”
I am in an ongoing process of changing my habits or my routine in every way but when I look back I can realise how much harm I have already caused to my environment and it will take a longer period to recover.
We have to start eco-friendly and sustainable living at individual level and then spread the awareness in family , friends and this practice can go further with this chain.
I am not telling you to just throw away all the plastic in your home and suddenly start using eco-friendly practices and products. It is a slow process but now it’s time to start. What we are watching around us right now is surely not coexistence.
And trust me few steps are really simple to start with.
- You can drink that coconut water directly or in a glass without asking for a straw.
- Always having that cloth bag with you while buying groceries.
- Use your kitchen waste for composting. @wormrani is the best person to tell you the magic of black gold. If you are not a plant lover, sell that compost. Trust me there are many to buy that chemical-free compost.
- Try to shift to natural products for kitchen use and personal care (ask your grandmother or mom about that, they will tell you natural products are far better than chemical ones on your skin and hair).
- Try to carry your own reusable water bottle with you when you travel instead of buying those plastic water bottles every time.
- For the plastics you can’t avoid, please don’t throw them.
- There is a small business where you can donate your plastic waste. One that I know is @ecokari. They turn that plastic waste into handmade beautiful products like bags and planters.
- Also, you can use your kitchen waste in making Bio-enzymes which can be further used for chemical-free cleaning.
- Whenever you get the opportunity of plantation goes for it.
When we all are following these sustainable practices, remember little ones- the younger generation is watching us. It’s time to teach ourselves and our little ones about this coexistence.
They are the one who are going to take it further in the future and they will learn only when we will follow.
A kid throwing a chocolate wafer on the road somewhere must’ve seen some adult doing that.
If they will see us putting our dry and wet household garbage separately, surely they are going to follow that.
Why not introduce sustainability at an early age or as part of homeschooling for our early learners. As we say that home is the first place to learn.
Learning through nature is best thing we can give a child but for that, nature must exist.
Its really not easy to “bring that green back” but its never too late to start.
